Video Games Live was in Vancouver last night playing at the Orpheum, and it was awesome!
For those of you who don't know what it is, it's basically a traveling show of video game music performed live by various orchestras and choirs
[link]It was possibly the best concert I have been too. The Orpheum is such a beautiful venue, and I've been to lots of symphonies there, but the mood at this show was definitely different. It was like being at a convention. The place was packed with gamer geeks with their DSes and PSPs and there were even a few cosplayers. Makes me wish I could have cosplayed myself, as they even had a little cosplay contest before the show started.
They had some pretty sweet prizes too.
The music was performed by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Vancouver Cantata Singers. They did an amazing job playing music from Zelda, Civilization, Halo, Metroid, Mario, Warcraft, and a bunch of others that I haven't played. It was so great to see some of the best music from my favourite games performed live, with clips from the game played on a big screen above.
There was also a piano soloist who played a Final Fantasy medley, and holy crap could she play! She would pwn Piano Squall any day. She also did a Mario medley, and her hands just flew. It was inhuman. I was in awe, and I've seen lots a great pianists in my day. She even played an encore of Tetris, it was great
I was a bit disappointed that by the end of the show they hadn't played any fully orchestrated Final Fantasy, but then for the encore, they played One Winged Angel. It was epic. It was the AC version, so not my favourite, but epic all the same. And then they finished off with Castlevania.
It was a truly awesome show, and I highly recommend going if it's in your area
