Sorry, this may be a bit of a rant.

So I was watching the news the other day and they were doing this story on how you keep the Christmas/Holiday spirit in this tough time of economic uncertainty.

Last I checked, I don't need to go out and spend money in order to be in the "spirit" of the season. Yes it's a season and a tradition of giving, but seriously, are we so consumer driven that we have to spend oodles amount of money for it to feel like Christmas? Apparently yes, yes we are.

And then I was listening to the radio and they were debating whether or not it's okay to use coupons, and buy gifts on sale or could this offend your gift receiver. Well heck, if someone is going to be offended because I used a freaken coupon to get a deal, they wouldn't be getting a gift from me in the first place!
Hell, I've never had a whole lot of money to spend on Christmas gifts anyway. I normally try and make gifts, but I'm never that organized in time. So this year, I'm going to the flea market to do some of my shopping. Not only is it cheaper, but it sure beats the shit out of the mall.

WTF people, get over the fact that you can't consume as much as you're used to and just enjoy the freaken holiday.
And while you're at it, get the hell off the roads, you drive like maniacs!

Ok, I could keep going, but it would probably just get off topic and I'd end up deleting it anyway...

....

So, I just plan on spending my time baking cookies, and I think I may even try making chocolates this year too.
I should learn how to make my Mom's spice bread too! There is nothing like the smell of fresh baking that makes me think of Christmas. Yummm ^_^

Enjoy some new features :)

Gosh, I hate how holidays in general have become buying fests. This year, I think I'm just going to attempt to do some large scale art for each household or something. ... Or not, because I'd only have 5 days to do, like, 10 pieces. I don't think I even have enough paper for that.

I hear ya! :/ A few years ago my family decided to stop buying gifts. My mom still gets me something, but it's just something we need. This year they're going to pay for Winter tires for our car. Stuff like that.

I hate Christmas more and more every year. xD

No shit! People in our culture are so consumer driven that it's rediculous. Why not just enjoy each others company?

... though it is a good excuse to get some more fabric to make something for the new year ;) hehe

Yup, my mom is like that too. She just gets us what we need and what we can't afford. We just pick names between all us kids and keep it cheap, just so we all have a little something to open.
And then we eat, and that's the best part :D

Ugg, no kidding... I get most mad when people jump down your throat for taking the honest gesture of saying "Merry Christmas" and get all offended if they don't celebrate it. Especcially schools and airports who take away all the Christmas fun for the few people who have some kind of problem with it. I'm Athiest and I still love the holiday because of the lights, the music, and the general mood that people... USED to have during the season

My mom gave me hell for not wanting to wrap all the little gifts in my boyfriend's stocking. So sue me if I don't want to waste that time when it could be spent with my boyfriend... not to mention it's just a waste of paper, anyway.

I did go all out this year buying presents for my sweetheart, but I got things he actually needs. His stocking is full of practical items.
So yeah, for me, being able to spend a lot is a nice feeling, because his parents have never been well off, so he hasn't had many happy holidays. I don't care about commercialism, I just want to make him happy.

As for coupons and whatnot... I wouldn't give a damn if someone used one for me. During these times, you really shouldn't be picky like that. Besides, as long as it was something that still came from the heart, why does it matter how much it ended up costing?
Shopping at the flea market is a great idea, because there's a better chance of getting something unique.

I am not a social creature, so please don't be offended if I don't respond to your comment or comment on your work before favoriting it :)
:iconnolwen:
I know! Screw all that politically correctness!
That's one of the reasons we are so consumer driven in the first place. Because everyone would rather just do what's socially acceptable (like consume) to avoid offending anyone who celebrates differently.
Say what you want, wish people a Merry Christmas. If they get offended that you are wishing them well then that's their issue.
If someone wished my Happy Hanukkah I would say thank you, not be offended because I didn't celebrate it.

As bad as I feel that I can't do all the things I wanted to do for the people around me this year for Christmas, I'm not gonna let it get my Christmas spirit down! :#1:

Yes, I agree so much! I hate that it’s all about the buying and the consumerism. And I can’t even say “Marry Christmas!” without someone getting offended. Heck, I can’t even make any reference to Jesus without someone getting mad. Non-Christians can celebrate all they like however they like but they don’t have to get pissed at me for mentioning that Christmas is a Christian holiday. I’m going to continue to say “Merry Christmas” and buy what I can afford. And if society doesn’t like that, society can go hang.
